Home Guard Heads

An interesting one this ~ to carve two life-size “Dad’s Army”- style heads for a village-fete-type game (I can’t say more than that ~ it’s Top Secret!).

I had a polystyrene head to guide me with the dimensions of the carvings, as I had to make sure that the helmets would fit on comfortably ; apart from that, the idea was simply to give them surprised or comical expressions.

I ordered some oak blocks of the correct dimensions, and got to work drawing on the profile.

After this came the tedious job of roughing out the shape.

After this stage it gets a bit more enjoyable, making the head look a little more realistic rather than like a robot or Lego man.

Once the shape is established, the detail goes on…..

The next one will be a thinner face and both heads are to be painted by the customer.
