Apprentice Carvers at Withernsea Carnival

We returned to Withernsea for the annual Carnival, and like last year it was great fun; the lighthouse gardens are a beautiful setting and the wonderful family atmosphere made it a joy to be involved. Polite and extremely patient children queued throughout the day for the chance to do the business with a mallet and chisel, and it was a pleasure to see the enjoyment the few minutes carving brought to the participants and their families.

Last year everyone chipped away at a design of the lighthouse, and it was nice to see the reactions of the children who had contributed to the carving when they spotted it in the flower bed.

This time I thought a nice design would be a seagull, although I’m afraid to say there was some debate through the day as to whether it was more like a duck. At least everyone recognised it was a bird, so my drawing wasn’t that bad!
