Don’t Panic! Corbels for Old Town’s Board Inn

Bridlington Old Town is full of fascinating buildings untouched by development and modern architecture; the High Street is one of the most complete examples of Georgian style in the whole of Britain, and was used extensively for the recent filming of the remake of Dad’s Army, released in 2016.

Clues to the film’s location are dotted about ~ many shops and pubs having had a full  “Walmington-on-Sea” makeover, such as the Black Lion, renamed the Royal Oak Inn for Captain Mainwaring, Pike and co.

Half way down High Street is situated the Grade II Listed Board Inn, also used as a film location, and in need of 2 new corbels to match the existing architecture.

I managed to prise off one corbel to use as a template (see picture above), probably the first time is had been separated from the building for many many years. The carving looked like it was in pine, but I decided to source some oak to be sure of it’s durability in an exposed position.

Having just moved I was without a workshop, so chipped away in a downstairs room of the new house ~ not ideal, but I think I managed to reproduce the designs pretty well. It made a change to have to stick rigidly to a strict pattern, usually I can use some artistic license to fit the design to a curve in a tree or to avoid a knot, so it was a good lesson.
