A Carving Lovely as a Tree?

On to the next Sewerby Hall Woodland Walk panel, and a popular verse adorns this one: “I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree”

To illustrate the wording I carved some instantly recognisable leaves ~ from a willow tree and a sycamore.

I decided to attempt to carve a section of a monkey puzzle branch at the other end of the panel ~ it had to be done, as a tribute to the life of the huge old tree which had been so sadly missed by the visitors to Sewerby Hall.

I was a bit apprehensive about the carving ~ looking closely at the branches, the leaf segments were thin and protruded quite precariously; I was a little nervous that there might be some breakages or that the carving wouldn’t stand the test of time.

I’m not convinced I managed to get it completely right, but I’m not sure I could have done it much different either! At least I’m confident there’ll be no breakages as I was careful not to do much undercutting on the leaf segments and kept everything as chunky as I could.
