The musical notation was going to begin on the middle stump, continuing on the third stump around the guitarist. I’d left an area under the elephant’s ear for the scroll, which would fold around behind the musician.

The next thing was to have the scrolled music coming to a conclusion at the bottom of the carving, and to fit in a book somewhere (as requested by the client). My idea was to take the music into an open book, as there was a perfect spot where the trunk bowed out.

……then carved, complete with the scroll emerging from under the arm and entering the book.
I drew the musical staves on in preparation for carving the notes.
A similar scroll will decorate the centre stump, but this was the finishing point for today.
